4 Do’s and Don’ts for Home Decorating

If you own your property, putting your personal stamp on it will make it feel like a home. Decorating your home can feel like a very personal undertaking, but there are a few basic design rules that can ensure you are successful.

But there are many things you need to bear in mind when it comes to home decorating. After all, you have to live in it, right?

Whether you just renovated your home or moved to a new location, following several do’s and don’ts will ensure the space becomes your own.

Don’t Get Matching Furniture

When you are furniture shopping, it is easy to purchase an entire set for an area. While everything matches, it can also cause the space to lack personality. It can also make your house look too much like a catalogue. Instead, consider picking one or two pieces you like and then mix things up by getting complementary side pieces. It keeps things interesting and cohesive. Purchasing furniture can get expensive, so make sure you have adequate funding before doing so.

One option is to take out a personal loan to help cover the costs of decorating your home. That way, you can take advantage of deals now instead of waiting until you have saved up enough to pay.

Another option (probably the best one) is to follow some tips for your home to look more expensive without spending too much money!

Do Consider Your Home’s Current Look

Think about the architecture of your house before coming up with a decorating design. If your home has ornate architecture, a modern home interior design aesthetic won’t work as well. Your location may play a role as well.

If you love the Mediterranean Revival style of Floridian homes but live in the Northeast USA, the location won’t work as well.

You can be inspired by your geographic location as well. If you live in the country, include some rustic elements. If you live by the sea, have some maritime themed artwork or trinkets.

Don’t Get Anything Too Themed

You may have a specific era or style of design you love, and it’s easy to turn to this for all your inspiration. However, it’s too easy to take your design too far and only draw inspiration from this one source. The space then ends up looking too themed, and it may look like something out of a museum. It may end up looking like you have tried too hard, and it might not look like it belongs with the rest of the house.

Instead, consider taking certain ideas from your inspiration, like artwork, furniture, or colors. You can then incorporate it into your home with other pieces. If you are inspired by Victorian homes, you might hang lacy, airy curtains at your windows but keep the rest of the room light and clutter-free.

You’ll still get the overall look and feel you are going for, but it will look less like a museum.

Do Mix Up the Colors

Even if you love the color blue, that doesn’t mean your entire room should be covered in blue. If you are having problems getting your color palate to match, using only one color could get in your way when you try to include other hues.

Instead, spend some time looking over your current accessories and furniture to see if anything stands out to you. Look at everything that appeals to you or makes you happy. You can then take those colors to create a color scheme around colors that you love in your home.

We hope these home decorating dos and don’t have inspired you. Get more inspiration right here with our interior design articles.
